Halloween is my favorite time of the year (and the busiest), so I am super excited to post my first October DIY! Even though we're halfway to Halloween, it's never too late to start making fun decorations!
What You'll Need (pictured below)
What You'll Need (pictured below)
- Foam Wreath
- Glitter Branches
- Tinsel (I used one that had pumpkins)
- Thick Ribbon
- Battery operated decorative lights (& 2 AA batteries)
- LED flashing Skull
- Staples or Wire
- Hot Glue Gun
I purchased all items from the dollar tree, so I was able to make this wreath for $7!
STEP 1: Hot glue one end of your ribbon to the wreath, and wrap it all the way around. Once you reach where you started, hot glue the ribbon again.
Here's the wreath all wrapped along with the type of ribbon I used. Your ribbon doesn't have to be evenly spaced, once everything is put together you won't see much of it.
STEP 2: Next, take your glitter branches and cut them into various sizes. Before hot glueing them to your wreath, it's best to lay them out to decide how you want them to flow. Once you're happy with the way it looks, begin glueing down your pieces! In total I used one and a half glitter branches. (It's good to have leftover pieces so you can fill in any spots you notice later).
STEP 3: Add your lights! I found some cute little pumpkin ones. The best way to attach your lights is not by using a hot glue gun. This is where your staples or wire come in. Turn your wreath over (glitter branches face down) and attach the lights to the back of the wreath using bent wire or staples (minus the staple gun - it's pretty easy to just push them in). This part was frustrating just because it took time to get the placement right, but once you get going it's easy!
Don't bother attaching the battery pack and switch just yet, we'll add that on towards the end.

STEP 4: Apply your tinsel using staples in various places! When I applied my tinsel I removed the pumpkins (they were attached by little twisty ties). This made it easier to work with and allowed me to place the pumpkins where I thought they looked good. The picture after step 5 shows the wreath without the pumpkins, which also works well!
The picture below also shows where I filled in the bottom with tinsel. Before finishing the wreath, I actually added some leftover pieces of glitter branches where I felt they were needed (bare spots).

STEP 5: Lastly, I added my skull to the center of the wreath. Make sure you mostly glue the end of his jaw or else you won't be able to reach the little switch that turns his LED eyes on!
So what about the battery pack for the lights? After I applied the skull, I simply hot glued the pack to the back of the wreath. I didn't experience light problems after hot glueing the pack, but if that's something that you're a little worried about you can also use wire to hold it.
What I forgot: After finishing my wreath I realized, I didn't add a hook! However I already had a plastic one (from walmart) on my door, so I easily attached my wreath to it using the light wires!

There you have it! My favorite thing about this wreath is that you can choose whatever colors you want, and you can choose to take things out or add in other things!
Soon I'll be posting a more 'elaborate' tutorial for purple batty/gothic wreath!
