First of all, when we say retin-A, we mean any retinoid: stieva-A, tazorac, differin and so on.
We recommend using retin-a at night, and remembering to wear sunscreen when out for long periods because retinoids can leave skin more vulnerable to sunburns.
1.) It Plumps Your Skin, Really!
Retin-A creams can help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and has been proven to do so! They work by increasing your skin’s stores of collagen and hyaluronic acid.
2.) Prevents Skin Aging.
At the same time as Retin-A is boosting those stores of collagen and hyaluronic acid, it's also slowing down the rate at which you lose them with age, thereby warding off wrinkles that haven't even shown up yet! Cool, right? That's why it's best to using Retin-A at a young age (That means if you're 13, it pays to use it now!) before your skin is visibly in trouble. However, you do need to keep up with the treatment to keep the results. If you stop using it, your skin will eventually go back to the way it was before.
3.) It Makes Your Skin Tone More Even & Glowy
This happens because it's exfoliating away all the dulling dead skin cells on the surface - and does a far better job of it than any over-the-counter scrub or peel can do! It may take a while to notice this side effect if you get the initial flaking and redness, but once your skin gets used to it (and with proper application), you'll have smoother, more radiant skin.
Plus, if you’re dealing with sun damage, melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a.k.a. those marks you get after a pimple heals up), retinoids speed up the healing/fading process so you can get your even skin tone back. And they’re way cheaper than IPL (intense pulsed light treatments).
4.) Helps Control Blocked Pores, Acne and Oil Production
No one likes any of these things! This is the main reason I use and love retin-a. When I regularly use (my prescription) Retin-A I have visibly less acne and my skin is way less oily. Retinoids -as mentioned above- are like an exfoliant, so they get rid of the dead skin cells that block pores and lead to acne. Plus, they also decrease oil production!
5.) It's Inexpensive!
The most important part, especially if you're young! Compared to the average price of other anti-aging products with their lack of results (which can be in the $100's), retinoids are a pretty good swap! Most run around $30 and last for quite a while, because when using retinoids less is more.
*Note:
If you visit a dermatologist and suffer with frequent outbreaks or have hyper-pigmentation from acne "scars", I would definitely recommend asking your doctor if a prescription strength retinoid would be a good idea. Prescription retinoids are the same as most retinoid topical's except the fact that they're twice as strong, which means they're generally a little more effective on trouble areas.
