With the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, there's sure to be tons of food and lot's of cold beverages - including cocktails and beers. Of course this should be a day to indulge, but if you're looking to cut some calories here's a list of drinks to make and beers to try!
Coconut Margarita
(80 calories)
Pour coconut tequila over ice (or ice rocks), add a splash of coconut water, and squeeze a lime wedge over top. Yum!
Wine Spritzer
(30 calories)
Mix 1/4 wine and 3/4 seltzer water. This will help save calories and can help avoid a hangover the next day.
Fruit Cup Cocktails
(154 calories)
Add light vodka to frozen fruit cups (Dole) for a delicious, refreshing and cold single-serve drink with a fruity kick!
Cosmopolitan Lite
(75 calories)
Typically 220 calories, you can lighten your cosmo up by squeezing a wedge each of lime and orange into 1 oz of cranberry flavored vodka. Top with club soda and serve on the rocks!
Sunrise Mimosa
(75 calories)
An already lower calorie drink and a classic. Just use 1 oz. of orange juice and 3 oz. champagne. It's perfect for summer because it won't sit heavy.
Low-Calorie Mojito
(50 calories)
Mix rum, a few torn mint leaves, two to three lime wedges, and a splash of agave nectar (or honey, but this changes calories) in a glass with ice. Top the mixture with soda water.
Pineapple Lemon Cocktail
(98 calories)
3oz of frozen pineapple, 1 ounce of low-calorie lemon vodka (calorie count changes depending on brand), 2 ounces of lemon lime sparkling water, and juice from one lemon and one lime wedge.
Stir the first three ingredients together and top with the lemon and lime wedge.
Mini Margarita
(80 calories)
Margaritas are usually in pretty big glasses and are incredibly sweet, so they're usually about 470 calories per cup. Swap that big glass for a mini margarita. Squeeze a couple of lime and orange wedges into a glass. Add 1 oz of tequila and a splash of sweet and sour mix (optional). Either blend with ice cubes or serve on the rocks.
Basic Bellini
(105 calories)
A super easy cocktail to make. Blend 2 oz white-peach puree with 4 oz Prosecco to enjoy this delicious low-cal italian favorite!
Strawberry Daiquiri
(135 calories)
Commercial daiquiri mixes contain very little fruit and extremely heavy on corn syrup and other artificial sweeteners, rounding a typical drink at about 350 calories.
Instead of mixes, puree 1 cup of strawberries in a blender (or my favorite to use, Nutribullet) with 1 oz. light rum and a handful of ice cubes and a sprinkle of sugar to taste.
Pina Colada
(140 calories)
Do you like pina coladas? But hate the calories? These cocktails are the perfect mix of creamy and sweet. Mix 1 oz. coconut rum with 4 oz. pineapple juice, then top with a splash of club soda. Serve over ice!
